What is dental decay?
Dental decay is also called dental caries. It is caused by microorganisms that stay on teeth in the form of layers known as biofilm.
Dental caries depends on multiple factors like the types of microorganisms, availability of sugars, quality of tooth surface, saliva, amount of time etc.
Microorganisms need carbohydrates (sugar) for survival.
It is a continuous disease process. Once it starts, it keeps on progressing even if it feels from outside like nothing is happening.
It results in loss of minerals from tooth surface and later on loss of tooth structure as well.
