It is hard to maintain proper oral health in child as they are not interested in oral care at this time. However, these are the formative years in your child’s life. The habits you inculcate in them now will stay with them for rest of the life. Here, I will suggest some guidelines to pick out the right oral care tools.
Parents should pick out a toothbrush that is designed for babies. These toothbrushes have very soft bristles and small heads. Brushing should start as the first tooth erupts.
According to American Association of Pediatric Dentistry you can use fluoridated toothpaste specially for children. It has half the amount of fluoride to that of adult toothpaste. You can also use non fluoridated toothpaste till 2years. They are generally flavored which can improve the child acceptance.
Amount of toothpaste to be used:
Size of a Rice grain.
Where to look for amount of fluoride in a toothpaste:
To encourage child’s interest you can allow them to choose fun toothbrush. When children take lead they are likely to keep the habit. The size of the toothbrush is slightly larger than that used for babies.
Fluoridated for children.
Amount of toothpaste to be used: Pea size
Parental supervision is must.
Same as preschoolers. To make it a fun experience you can also use electric toothbrush.
Brushing properly for 2-3 minutes is more than enough. You don’t need to brush for 10-15 minutes.
As long as the toothbrush has soft bristles & small enough for child’s mouth, you can use anytype of toothbrush and any fluoridated paste specially for children.
