In this post, I am going to tell you the real, hard facts. Let me put up a question. Just be honest in thinking about it.
Is there a sure-shot way to prevent dental decay in children? Is there some routine that can be followed or products that can be used to prevent dental decay 100% in children?
In an ideal world, yes, there is a sure shot way to prevent dental decay in most children.
The magic formulae 🡪
- Brush twice daily
- Eat fibrous food
- Restrict the use of sugars
Being honest and a parent myself, no, there isn’t a sure shot way to prevent dental decay in most children.
Now, let’s face the real situation. With so much exposure to refined food and so many loving people around who won’t stop gifting chocolates and toffees and what not, there isn’t a way that can prevent dental decay 100% in every child!
I salute the parents who have kids with no dental decay. And I stand with the others.
How does a decaying tooth look like?
Tooth decay can be identified in early stages. Let me help you here by showing what you can look for in your child’s teeth. You can clearly identify 4 stages.
Stage 1- White Spot
White spots appear as white spots/ band on the tooth surface closest to the gum line. This is a reversible stage and decay can be halted.
Stage 2- Brown pit
Brown pit is Yellow, brown or black band indicative of progressive decay.
Stage 3- Cavity
Cavities look like brownish-black holes/ areas on teeth
Stage 4- Root Stump
This is an advanced stage of tooth decay. Only brownish black portion of teeth blending with gums is visible.
What can be done about tooth decay?
You can do the following to keep tooth decay in check
- Develop a strong oral care routine:
Start by making it a habit to brush at least twice daily. You can also add an extra brushing session if your child eats something that can remain sticking to teeth. Rinse after every meal. Try to make it fun for the child. You can also make stories of brushing with their favorite cartoon or imaginary character.
2. Using age-appropriate brush and toothpaste.
Check out our previous post on parents guide to toothbrush and toothpaste.
3. Assist brushing:
Show your child how to properly brush the front surfaces, back surfaces and chewing surfaces of their teeth. Till your child is 8 years old, you have to brush his/ her teeth because of limited dexterity of hands and wrists.
4. Monitor consumption of sugars in diet:
Moderation is the key! Eating sweets sometimes is completely fine, of course, but a sugar-rich diet can quickly lead to decayed teeth.
5. Keep checking for signs of decay:
Look for white spots, brown pits and cavities. Consult Pediatric Dentist if you notice any signs of teeth decay.
6. Regular preventive checkups:
Receiving regular dental check-ups is an essential part of preventing tooth decay in children. The sooner we’re able to assess your child’s smile and identify potential tooth decay, the quicker we’re able to treat the condition and prevent it from progressing. Depending on the child’s age, dental check-ups should occur once every 3- 6 months every year.
